Following the success of the major’s return to Northern Ireland, Royal Portrush Golf Club is in prime position to host the British Open Championship again in 2025. The 2019 Open, won by Offaly Golfer Shane Lowry, was the first time Portrush had been the host course since 1951.

The oldest championship in golf was postponed in 2020 for the first time since World War II because of the Covid-19 pandemic but went ahead in 2021, with Royal St. George’s the venue & Collin Morikawa. Not only was the 2019 Open on the Antrim coast widely hailed as a practical, sporting and commercial triumph, there was always a plan to stage two championships at Portrush within a decade when it returned to the circuit. Northern Ireland has the added benefit of breaking runs of successive Opens in either Scotland or England.

Royal Portrush Golf Club

Not many golf courses in the world can boast about the status of their regular guests quite like Royal Portrush. Graeme McDowell, Padraig Harrington, Rory McIlroy, and Darren Clarke are all regulars at Portrush and have all won major championships. They were joined in 2019 by fellow Irishman, Shane Lowry, who won his first major championship on this very course at the 148th Open Championship.
