At a Glance

The Island Golf Club is one of Ireland’s most underrated courses. Facing ocean views on 3 sides of the course, The Island was once, well, an island! It is now attached to the mainland though still an isolated peninsula-like spur of links land sandwiched between the Irish Sea, the beach of Donabate, and the Broadmeadow estuary. It is, as a result, quite easy on the eye! Its history dates back, like many Irish links courses, to the late 1800s. In recent years, course designers, like Eddie Hackett, have helped to redesign elements of the course to bring it into the new era of golf while still keeping its natural surroundings intact.

But we are here for the golf...

The course itself consists of some of Ireland’s most daunting sand dunes. Not only are they as high as some on the west of Ireland, but they also are rugged and quite the obstacle throughout.

The course is full of blind shots and is a great example of a links course where your short game must be dialed in to score well. The greens are hard and fast and 3 putts are quite common so keep that in mind.

When the wind and rain pick up the course is still so enjoyable and that is the true charm about the Island.

Our Guests Say:

All the reviews of the Island say the same thing, it is criminally underrated. We tend to agree. With Portmarnock and Royal Dublin nearby, the Island completes a compact trio of links excellence in Dublin.

Our Verdict:

The course is located quite close to Dublin City Centre and Dublin Airport. The Island is definitely one to consider if you have an extra night or two in Ireland’s capital.
