The course is set up each day based on the prevailing weather conditions. Though quite long, the course is fair and rewards good play. It plays 7,100 yards from the back tees and roughly 6,500 yards from the visitors. Depending on which tees you play from, Old Head will play like two different courses. Compared to most links courses in Ireland, the ground is quite flat and the course is open. That does not necessarily mean it is an advantage to the golfer as many of the holes are played alongside the cliff edge bringing out of bounds into play not only on your tee shot but also on your second (and in some cases your third!). The 17th is one of the most memorable holes in the South West of Ireland as the green has a wonderful backdrop. It is also memorable because the Par 5 can play between 570 and 630 yards! Par this hole and you will be full of confidence stepping up onto the 18th tee.
Take advantage of the world-class practice facilities before you play. It is the perfect way to tune your game before walking onto the 1st tee box.
Old Head is the perfect welcome to links golf in the South West of Ireland! Get used to play under the Atlantic breeze here and it will stand to you as you progress through the region.
"This has to be one of the most spectacular locations I have ever seen for a golf course…and the holes along by the sea are especially lovely, when the wind blows, this course will take on an entirely new character…The beauty of the place will make it a must for tourists from the U.S. but anyone who has a love of golf and scenic beauty should make a point of playing here, it's as simple as that."
